I've always had trouble getting the proportions and measurements of an object I want to model from pictures. Perspective distorts the shape. Only the top, side, front, and rear isometric projections in blueprints allow a modeler to get really accurate measurements. Unfortunately, Star Trek only releases good blueprints with multiple viewpoints for its best-known ships, in the various encyclopedias and plastic model kits. Babylon 5 has only released a few good blueprints, in the Babylon 5 Security Manual. That's why I've rendered many of the internet-distributed 3D meshes of ships from Babylon 5 and Star Trek using POV-Ray's orthographic camera, and posted the pictures here. It's fairly easy to print out these pictures and create models based on them. That's how I created my Earth Force One model. By the way, I have to admit that I have an ulterior motive for creating this site: I'm hoping to see some POV-Ray-native versions of these ships! ;-) So, if you create one, please let me know, and I'll put the model on the appropriate page.
