I always wanted to build robots as a hobby, but I can't solder, and I have no carpentry skills. I CAN put together Lego bricks, and I can program a computer. You can buy all the stuff you need to build a computerized Lego robot with Lego Mindstorms. I got a set for myself, and it's awesome! An online bookstore devoted to... you guessed it... robot books. ;-) It has many books targeted at the hobbyist. You can order Lego MindStorms and add-on kits there, as well as a new book for advanced MindStorms inventors. (It looks like one of those O'Reilly books with the animal etchings on the covers, so you know it's gotta be good... ;-) ) You can also find your favorite robot movies, fiction, and toys.
